The Struggle of Pity What is pity? Pity is simply the concern aroused by the misfortune or suffering of others. As the emotion of pity deepens, it can correlate itself with sympathy and lead to compassion (Baird 1). Dante comprises this idea of pity within the narration of his characters in the Inferno. Dante creates fluctuating moralities that contrasts with the narrative tale of the sinners to the protagonist. The contrasts that are made by the sinner are reflected upon by Dante, he refers to this as the struggle pity. The great struggle of pity is brought on upon by the sinners, whom create scapegoats to relieve blame from their own sins and to provoke pity from their audiences. Dante, during Ugolinos tale has evidently found a moral vantage point, in which he does not pity Count Ugolino. Ugolino, like Francesca blames the faulty of others for his sins and not of his own folly. Â…And I began/ already blind, to grope over their bodies/ and for two days called to them, though they were dead/ Then fasting had more power then grief (XXXIII. 72-75). Ugolino holds hunger has the culprit, whom was the cause of his sin. Although, the two tales Francesca and Ugolino are figuratively different, they do share common apathy for pity. Dante suggests that the implication of pity in the Inferno is due to the sinners apathy for self pity. These wretched souls play off of the reader or audiences emotion for their tormented nature. Guido la Pisa wrote, The suffering of the damned souls should move no one to compassion, as the bible attests. And the reason for this is that the time for mercy is here in this world, while the world to come it is time only for justice. Use of the three dimensional grammar frameworks Foreign language teachers always struggle in maintaining the balance between the communication and grammar instruction. Considering the grammar usage in terms of the grammar formation and teaching of the grammar and the teaching of other linguistic rules, it can be said that it is deep rooted concept between the educator and learner (Halliday Matthiessen, 2013). There are three dimensions of meaning, form and use within the grammar teaching. This article will discuss these three dimensional grammar frameworks. The dimension of form refers to the way that the grammar structure is assembled and organized within a discourse or text. There are several inbuilt disciplines within this dimension such as morphology, phonology, syntax and graphology that play as a major factor in the learning and teaching of any language form (Purpura, 2013). The dimension of form mostly focuses on identifying the grammar structure such as the auxiliary verb or different forms of the main verb. The dimension of meaning is associated with the meaning of a specific structure of grammar and what it conveys. As stated by Kucer (2014) the most natural component of the dimension of meaning is the derivational morphemes, worlds, lexical strings and multiword notions. The meaning can be of two kinds, grammatical and lexical. The grammatical structure is mostly focused on placing the receiver of the action. The dimension of use is associated with why and when the speakers of English language decide the usage of grammar structures over any other structure which can also convey the similar meaning (Bygate, Skehan Swain, 2013). It pursues the same and relevant components, discourse patterns and social functions. The structure is also used when the agent is unknown or redundant. It is also considered that these three dimensions are used in the teaching of grammar for expressing means and utilizing in the context appropriate usage. Use of focus - on- form tasks The focus on form is an approach within the grammar and language learning sphere, where the learners have been made to be conscious of the grammatical forms of any specific language that the speakers already started using communicatively. The concept of focus on forms has been directly contrasted with the idea of focus on meaning which has been restricted to the meaning of the forms and paid no such attention to the forms of the language (de la Fuente, 2014). The idea of focus on forms has been motivated by the lack of sustainability for the effectiveness of focus on forms on one hand, and clearly demonstrated advantages by the language learning over the uninstructed language learning on the other. The learners of any language tend to acquire the features of the target language in a specific sequence, not all at one go. In this sequence, most of the stages in the learning process will indicate to the forms that are not like natives. Moreover progress within these stages is not at all done in a transparent way, however they may also indicate to the U shaped learning process where native like usage of the language may revert to the non-native usage of the language. Grammar instruction task using the corpora Cohort of Students: There are 10 students in the cohort aged 10-12 years. Student profile: The first language of these students is Sinhala or Tamil. They are at elementary level of the primary section. There have been several researches conducted for evaluating the effectiveness of the corpus linguistics. This task will be design for a cohort of students in the primary level. Within this cohort there are ten students who are learning the English language as a second language. Using the corpora based learning; the students will have two activities. Those activities are verb pairing game and the computer cloze activity. Both the activities have been described below: Verb pairing game: In this activity, the students will be divided into two groups. For this game the teacher will choose two verbs at one time. For the first verb pairing activity, the chosen verbs will be make and do. By dividing the students into two groups, the teacher will give the first groups few sentences that are corpus derived and those are without the selected verbs make and do. The second group of students will have the sentences with make and do. Therefore the teacher will make both the groups stand in two lines facing each other. After this, the students who are having sentences with the verbs will make different turns for paining these verbs with the other sentences that the second group has. Computer cloze activity For integrating this computer cloze activity in the class, the students can be benefitted in two different ways. They can practice the usage of verbs along with learning the collocations. The teacher will have to take help of computers and projectors in this activity. He or she will show the questions to the students with both the active and passive sentences. These will tell the students about the differentiation between the active and passive usage of grammar in English language. the students could also be asked to ask questions if they have any doubt regarding the formation of the passive voice. The next activity will involve the meaning of passive voice in English. The teacher will use flashcards where meaning of passive sentences will be written along with their active forms. Mbuti Culture Essay The Mbuti or Bambuti are one of several indigenous pygmy groups in the Congo region of Africa. Their language belongs to the Central Sudanic subgroup of the Nilo-Saharan phylum.1 After researching the Mbuti culture, I think we will see that their government, traditions, and culture is slowly and sadly melting into the surrounding, changing world. Mbuti’s primary mode of subsistence is Foraging. They hunt and gather food from the forest, and they trade as well for survival. The Foragers, or hunter-gatherers, in modern-day Zaire have survived with a subsistence lifestyle in small-scale societies. Political organization-Bambuti societies have no ruling group or lineage, no overlying political organization, and little social structure. The Bambuti are an egalitarian society in which the band is the highest form of social organization. Leadership may be displayed for example on hunting treks. Men and women basically have equal power. Issues are discussed and decisions are made by consensus at fire camps; men and women engage in the conversations equivalently. If there is a disagreement, infraction, or offense, then the offender may be banished, beaten or scorned. No chief or formal council has imposed rules. Kinship of the Bambuti tend to follow a patrilineal descent system, and their residences after marriage are patrilocal. However, the system is rather loose. The only type of group seen amongst the Bambuti is the nuclear family. Kinship also provides allies for each group of people. One of the Mbuti’s social problems is interclan disputes, over children and women. Women migrate to villages, losing close to one out of five of their female population. An uneven number of women lead to the inevitable transfer of women from one family, to another. This leads to great conflict between the men, over the disposition of their female siblings. â€Å"Divorce is common. The women often initiate divorce simply by packing their things (including small children) and moving back to their familys camp. If they have boys, they return to their father when they are old enough to hunt. The typical marriage is monogamous because women are scarce.† Beliefs and Values Prior to independence, tropical forest foragers remained outside the mainstream of society and politics. However, post independence wars and nation-building drives have changed customary ways. Landscapes are eroding due to the cutting of timber, the building of roads and mining. Commerce has also further isolated the Mbuti peoples. They are in a state of social flux affecting their beliefs, values, and traditional culture. Everything in the Bambuti life is centered on the forest. They consider the forest to be their great protector and provider and believe that it is a sacred place. They sometimes call the forest â€Å"mother† or â€Å"father.† An important ritual that impacts the Bambutis life is referred to as molimo. After events such as death of an important person in the tribe, molimo is noisily celebrated to wake the forest, in the belief that if bad things are happening to its children, it must be asleep. As for many Bambuti rituals, the time it takes to complete a molimo is not rigidly set; instead, it is determined by the mood of the group. Food is collected from each hut to feed the molimo, and in the evening the ritual is accompanied by the men dancing and singing around the fire. Women and children must remain in their huts with the doors closed. These practices were studied thoroughly by British anthropologist Colin Turnbull, known primarily for his work with the tribe. Molimo is also the name of a trumpet the men play during the ritual. Traditionally, it was made of wood or sometimes bamboo, but Turnbull also reported the use of metal drainpipes. The sound produced by a molimo is considered more important than the material it is made out of. When not in use, the trumpet is stored in the trees of the forest. During a celebration, the trumpet is retrieved by the youth of the village and carried back to the fire. The Mbuti people are in great cultural transition, being influenced more and more by the surrounding dominate encroaching culture. As the outside word encroaches on these indigenous people, their beliefs, traditions and practices, they are slowly losing their original uniqueness in an ever shrinking world that seems to be losing boundaries. As of recent, they are even given to the accumulation of outside currencies for use in their day to day lives.

Changing the past to suit the present was his job where he worked, the Ministry of Truth. One day, he encountered a beautiful young woman of about 26 years of age and instantly fell in love. Little did he know that she would be the one who would end his life. He dreams of sleeping with her but fears that he would be captured by the Thought Police because sex is illegal. During the Two Minutes Hate - a time when members of Ingsoc come together to despise Emmanuel Goldstein, a man who supported freedom and rights - the woman passes a note to Winston. It says for him to meet her in the forest where they can talk. They meet and make love, a feeling he misses since he divorced his wife. Also, doing this act means that he can accept thoughtcrime which is punishable by death. After this, Winston moves into an apartment and the woman, whose name the reader learns is Julia, acc ompanies him. Thinking they are safe from the Thought Police, they commit many different thoughtcrimes. Unfortunately, their renter betrays them and bugs were placed in the room that noted their every move. Julia is taken away and doesn't appear again until the last pages of the book. Winston is taken to jail where he is brainwashed through torture into accepting the ideas of Big Brother, an imaginary leader of the country Oceania. The conflict presented in 1984 is between democracy and totalitarianism. The reader can see Winston's desire for democracy as he writes in his journal and intimately associates with Julia, both of which are illegal in Oceania. I think it is part of nature that this happens. Intelligence, strength, cunning, size, and boisterousness, among other qualities, can single out an individual and make he/she powerful. Those who are powerful can usually survive the best. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone . . . period. It shows how important human qualities are to be human and what can happen when we are not in control of our own lives. This book is not suspenseful but horrifying in a non-gruesome way. Like it or not we are all aging! It is a scary thought for some. However, knowing that my grandparents, parents, and one day myself will have the option to obtain Medicare is very comforting. Medicare is a federal health care program that was put in place by Congress in 1965 to provide health insurance to Americans sixty-five and above. Medicare was then expanded in 1972 to also cover younger individuals who are disabled (Kaiser, 2012). Traditional Medicare provides coverage to all Americans sixty-five and older without taking into account income. Prior to Medicare a whopping fifty percent of seniors lacked health coverage (Center for Medicare Advocacy, 2009)! To think of all the individuals who could not afford health care or had preexisting health problems and where unable to be cared for is simply unacceptable. Private insurances felt taking care of those with prior illnesses and people sixty-five and older would be too costly. Medicare has put a stop to that issue. With this federal health care program Americans have a stable sense of security knowing that their insurance will not revoke their benefits if an illness arises or too many claims come about. It is my strong belief that after working forty years or more Americans have earned the right to have health care insurance. People deserve to reap the benefits of having paid their taxes for at least ten years. As a result of the new health reform there will be some changes happening to Medicare. To improve early detection there will be annual well-visit checkups, colorectal cancer screenings, mammograms, and colonoscopies covered by Medicare (Health Policy Briefs, 2010). Due to early detection of chronic illnesses which inevitably cost billions, such as heart disease and diabetes will be lowered. The experiments discussed were designed to display the relevance of throwing a dice to that of radioactive decay. In the first experiment, ten six-sided dice were thrown and the numbers that appeared each time recorded. The procedure was repeated each time removing a dice that had six after throwing. This was continued until all the dice had been emptied. The experiment was repeated using a limitless Excel number generator and finally with a 10-sided dice. As expected, the first experiment showed a gradually decreasing trend, synonymous with exponential decay. At time t=0 the total number of dice was 10. This corresponded to the number of un-decayed nuclei as explained by Murray and Hart (Murray, Arthur & Hart, 2012). Subsequent results were recorded as follows: t=1; 7 dice left, t = 2; 4 dice left, t=3; 4 dice left, t=4; 3 dice left, t=5; 1 dice left, and t=6; 0 dice left. These results are better displayed in the graph below. The second experiment involved 10 trials. At the time point t=0 there were 20 dice. Subsequent trials indicated the number of dice remaining per time as indicated in the graph. Apparently, there was a constant display after the eighth trial.   Management Styles Corporation management is necessary for an institution to survive during times of change as it is the role of management to provide a plan of action, leadership and delegation of authority. Management structure ensures growth will be maintained for the organization and that the corporation will continue to function. Multiple styles of management are determined by who has the responsibility for the delegation of responsibility for decision-making as well as the degree of participation in the decision-making processes across the company. In general, management systems appear to be impacted upon by the aims of the corporation, the magnitude of the organization and the cultural context the organization operates within (Kim, pp. 538-39). Optimal management style is essential to a corporation as the style used will determine how the institutions processes are organized, as well as how efficiently employees will work cooperatively or in competition with each other. Work experiences such as employee cooperation, corporation leadership and employee loyalty to the company will be dependant on the style of management used by the corporation. As such, it is important for different nations to develop human resource management practices that reflect their local circumstances and socio-cultural, political and economic situations. For example, some Asian nations such as South Korea, Taiwan and Japan have adopted a HRM strategy that is grounded in Confucian values of respect for the family foremost, and an emphasis on obligations to the collective (Rowden, pp. 163-64). Japanese Management System Japan is a democratic nation and has a highly refined and formalized culture that is in many ways restrained. The work ethics of Japanese business appears to focus dealing with work pressures in ways that are remarkably different to those of western industries. This is due to the lifetime socialization of Japanese citizens to think in terms of the collective, and behaviours that resemble individualism are highly discouraged. One way to ensure that its people conform to the practice of â€Å"maintaining face† is by the use of ostracism to disengage the non-conforming individualist from the group. Hence, team work and cooperative practices are very salient within the Japanese society. Especially, employees work with a high commitment to their organization, and also display a commitment to the economic welfare of their nation. The Japanese legal system maintains the labour standards that currently exist, a principle one being lifetime employment. Although some employees would prefer a different system to lifetime employment, the ingrained cultural management means that the practice is likely to remain. In fact the government and industry work together most cooperatively. The overall aim of the nation and its industries appears to be steady and continuous growth rather than a focus on profits, shareholder interests are secondary, and investors appear to be content with making minimal profits as long as growth is the focus. The form of management appears to be quite paternal and authoritarian (Mroczkowski, pp. 21-22). Japan tends to be very authoritarian in management style, and so there is little dispersion of power sharing across the company. Redundancy does not seem to be a concern for employees, as lifetime employment ensures that they are receiving a wage at home or they are relegated to another part of the company. As part of lifetime employment the homes of employees may likely be owned by the corporation that they work for. Employees tend to go on leisure trips as a group. Many areas of employee’s lives are influenced by the corporation that they work with. This is one of the ways conformity is expected. There is an emphasis on a team-oriented approach to corporate running. This incorporates Common and consistent goals, Organizational commitment, Role clarity among team members, Team leadership, Mutual accountability with the team, Complementary knowledge and skills, Reinforcement of required behavioural competencies and shared rewards. It s expected that such approaches fulfil the familial and community need that there is a gap present in today’s society, and so the company can fulfil a basic human need. Kaizen   The Japanese style of management is clearly characteristic of its collectivist cultural background. Foremost, the most prominent characteristic of the Japanese corporation is that it is family like in quality. As such, the Japanese corporation can be described as an â€Å"entity† firm, in contrast to a â€Å"property† firm. As an entity, the corporation functions as an institution in that it is maintained across time and has an identity of its own, that is separate and non-dependant on the employees and managers who work within it. This system of corporate governance has existed by way of lifetime employment, seniority of wages and promotion, as well as enterprise-based unions. Lifetime employment is characterized by management being primarily of employees who have spent their entire career within the firm. In this way the seniority wage system could be utilized as a promotion process by way of seniority of age and on the job task ability. Performance merit remained and rivalry was highly dependant on ones ability to cooperate with others (Bamber, p. 303).    What Is The Japanese Management System? So even if the personnel practices practiced by large Japanese firms are uniting with those of the Western States, Japan’s overall management system looks likely to retain its pre-eminent character.
